Crotchduster, Sigh, Blut Aus Nord, ...And Oceans, Mr. Bungle, Divina Enema, Alchemist, Grenade Kills 3.

Some might be considered more post-black, however, we already have Vintersorg, Arcturus and Borknagar, so I guess that counts.

    Hmm.

And Oceans, Divina Enema, Sigh and Alchemist are in, thanks!
I'd include Grenade Kills 3, but AS hasn't created the artist page yet, I think. Since I can't find any information about them on the web at all (except for the metal-archives.com page), this could get tricky.

However, I'm not so sure about the others. On the one hand, I don't want to be too restricting on the bands that may get suggested.

But on the other, we need a certain theme. Now we have basically 2 groups of bands in here: The one keeping that certain Vintersorg/Arcturus-ish sound, meaning 'chilly', possibly technically demanding, slightly progressive black metal with futuristic sounds...you know the deal. Is it that 'post black' thing you refer to? It's kind of an irony that this is a bunch of bands who all share a pretty similar style when this is a group about EXTRAORDINARY and EXPERIMENTAL and ie. not so common stuff. Avantgarde. But it's like with the term progressive metal - it's not really a description of the music anymore (I'm refering to all the Dream Theater clones) but it rather just became a label for a certain sound over time. That's why I'm keeping these bands.

And then there's the other group, the one that holds truly experimental and progressive bands while not playing almost the same style. Since I want to include both kinds of bands here, it is of course a very subjective matter if one band is fitting or not, especially regarding the latter group of bands.

So, in my opinion Blut aus Nord sounds too blackish and..well, ordinary. But I'm judging based on a sample track, so if anyone votes for Blut aus Nord too, I'll think about it. And maybe give it a deeper listen.

    And Mr Bungle, well...
Of course, it's extraordinary. No question. :P But it is not really metal. Especially not the stuff that came after Disco Volante. Yes, you could question the rest. But that's just my opinion. You may argue with me about that :)

The thing is, if we just pick up every band that is mentioned, then in a few months, we'll end up with 20000 bands of which 10900 aren't really special. Or are only considered 'avantgarde' because they have gloomy keyboards and manic spoken vocals. I want the connections to be a guide for others too of some kind, so they can find out about new bands that really set themselves apart from the rest.

And yes, I'll freely admit that there are already a few bands in here that are debatable. Like Sear Bliss, or Antimatter...

Because this whole thing, it's really a problematic topic... You could also say it's silly thinking and discussing about including a certain band for days...it's only a fucking AS group after all. But heh. I really don't know. Maybe I'd just like to hear your opinion on what I just wrote :)

But thanks. For posting as well as for suggesting.

I think focus should really be on EXTRAORDINARY. Very experimental. Not just 'oh some jazziness here and there' ;) I don't know if jazzy bands fit into the current roster, although we already got a few of them...Wayd, Farmakon...but if I add others too, I guess I'm pretty much obliged to add bands like Cynic, Death, Atheist as well...I don't know if they fit in this context.
    Any opinions?

  • Okay, in that case I still strongly recommend Fredrik Thordendal -- for he has released one extraordinary, disturbing, freaky album.
The others are very interesting, give them a try.

  • SLIPKNOTLOL

just kidding, what about Agalloch? idk if they're already on the list, i'm too lazy to check.

  • what about Agalloch
Really good music! But is it "just" Post-Black Metal? is it Avant-Garde? I cannot think of any other band incorporating sounds and structures similar of Agalloch -- maybe it is.

i think it's more along the lines of folk/goth and a bit of doom.

Carnival In Coal. It's Avant-Garde Extreme Metal. You should all check it out. They had even done a cover of the song Maniac (a pop song in the 80's). But believe me, it's so weird... and good!

Aberrant Vascular, Operatic avant-garde metal, very great!

  • Certainly Opeth if you've got Farmakon (The latter are often (incorrectluy) accused of being clones of the former), Abberent Vascular are also definitely bizzare enough to fit in. Also try listening to Ram-Zet, Strommoussheld and Love History; all are pretty unique and very strange.

I also feel that Blut Aus Nord deserve a connection only on the basis of their new album, but their older stuff is standard BM, although theychange their style hugely every album.

As for Sear Bliss, there's nothing to debate, they've been doing things very differently from any other Black Metal band for their entire history and get next to no praise for it, good on you for adding them \m/.

In addition to unexpecT, Moonlyght also, not too experimental but I think it fits
Peccatum and Ved Buens Ende should be in,

that's all for now. Zimmer's Hole may also be added :))

Added a few new bands based on your suggestions, thanks.
AS doesn't want Aberrent Vascular and Strommousheld though, most probably because no one has listened to it yet...

Carnival In Coal are in, so yes, Zimmer's Hole should be too, as they both follow the more, eh, humorous path.

Still reluctant about Opeth. May be progressive and blah blah, but that's not the point of this group...if it was, I'd have to add thousands of other bands, I explained that before...

But maybe extremely weird technical bands should indeed go in, as Special Defects is there as well - Behold the arctopus, Necrophagist...then again, Meshuggah, Atheist, Cynic, Watchtower...would be kind of required, too. Oh dear, so many decisions...

  • Sorry I mis spelt Strommoussheld, I knew they were there because I've listened to them. As for Opeth, the Death Metal aspects of their sound are minimal, any association to the Gothenburg sound has long since been removed, but really no-one sounds that much like Opeth.

haha, yes...I gotta admit that I kind of hold a grudge against Opeth, maybe that's one of the reasons...but I won't argue here about it, I'm doing that every day with a friend who is a huge Opeth fan, haha...

that's right! fight the good fight >:D!!!

  • What about Martyr, they should be there i reckon.

  • What about Root? Their old stuff is basically Black Metal but the last few albums have been really off the wall. Look them up in Metal archives. As for Martyr, personally I think including them may open a whole can of worms.

Hungarian groups like Gire and Thy Catafalque fall into this group. The bands are fairly close to each-other style-wise which is no wonder since they share a member. The music is basicly extreme metal with lots of various influences from in example electronic music and folk thrown in. The folk side gives a nice slavic taste to it.

http://www.gire.hu/ Gire's homepage. I'd recommend the latest demo "Nádak Erek".
I couldn't find Thy Catafalque's homesite but finding a mp3 or few shouldn't bee too difficult. The album "Tûnõ idõ tárlat" being most recommended.

    Great group btw.
