    Metalcore - unwelcomed or not?

I've heard recently one Killswitch Engage song, while listening on death metal tag. And I must say it wasn't bad. I even liked it after one hear. But I see they are also tagged melodic metalcore. I don't know metalcore, so I don't want to judge it after hearing closely to one track.

So what are your opinions? Should we remove metalcore from unwelcomed genres? Current statement may discourage some people from joining.

  • What???????
Did you have a bad day or something?? Are You feeling well?
I've heard few songs of Killswitch Engage, Avenged Sevenfold and some other bands this type, because my friends recommend it to me. Ok, it has got a melody, so what? It's still not metal. And it is boring... and sounds crappy.

    :)
My dear, I didn't say, that from now on I like metalcore. And it certainly has little in common with real metal, so it won't be ever in favour in this group. It's just the question if it should be listed in unwelcomed genres along with shit like nu-metal, emo etc.

So I take your opinion as "should remain unwelcomed" :).

  • "melodic malcore" left me cold. so my opinion is against it.
At the same time, I'm aware that many people concerned into metal like this bands (Killswitch, Avenged) - so it might be a sign that there is a better kind of nu-shit.

Let's check opinions of the other anti-nu members.
    Subject is quite interesting.

  • Metalcore was started in the 80s, when bands like SOD, Corrosion of Conformity, Carnivore, et al. began adding infusions of Hardcore influence into their Speed Metal/Thrash/Heavy Metal style. That's the only respectable Metalcore. This crap which passes for Metalcore now sounds like a bunch of amateurs who run as much distortion as possible through their guitars, in an attempt to hide the fact that they can't play, and, generally, take on the most whiny vocalist they can find.

  • hmm, I hate metalcore, sludgy guitars, mostly with the screamo vocals, crappy repetitive double bass

in all, I am against it

well I used to be into metalcore, but then I realized it is all the same. There are some more talented bands in the genre, in particular (older) As I Lay Dying, Cannae, Every Time I Die, and Stampin' Ground. But there are way more metalcore bands that suck major asshole like Killswitch Engage, Atreyu, Trivium, etc. Bands like that give the genre a bad name. The truth is that metalcore is a watered-down, trend-following scene where every band sounds the same. It really doesn't sound heavy to me anymore.

as a rule, I'm not sure if it should be banned, but at least it should be frowned upon. And although that is the case with metalcore, I think true, unadulterated hardcore punk should be welcomed. Since you guys seem to like purity in music, hardcore is one of the purest genres around. And then there are also d-beat/crust punk/powerviolence bands, without which grindcore would never have existed.

It would depend. Metalcore bands all sound different to each other, some have a sound which is just as bad as new metal but others (Lamb of God, Machine Head etc) are more metal than core and shouldn't really be banned from a group such as this, although they should be discouraged. A lot of metalcore bands are in the Encyclopedia Metallum, and they don't just let any rubbish in there.

  • Yowch. Metalcore is trash, and that's being generous.

I thought this group was against corporate-churned-out-bullshit-metal.

    Black Metal Ist Krieg!
  • are punk/crossover bands like The Exploited and other punk bands like Social Distortion and Bad Religion also unwelcomed? or are they ok? cos i listen to them occasionally.

and yup, i used to listen to lots of metalcore and they sound really boring after you get into other genres of metal. but personally i feel that its ok to have metalcore so long as (like metal archives put it) "its more metal than core".

Its not as bad as much other stuff so I'm not against it particularily strongly but there are things that bug me about it and I don't really like it. It doesn't really concern me whether it is banned or not.

It is. This is just a discussion.

  • I'm with jefftheterrible on this, as I have listened to some of the crossover bands mentioned, and even though they really weren't my thing, they were far better and more original than the so called "metal"core nowadays. To me todays "metal"core scene is just as bad as nu-"metal" scene 5 years ago, so I say it stays unwelcome.

Numetal and Metalcore are on the same page with me. Metalcore is the numetal of the 00s. I've ranted against it in my journal, might want to check that out, eh?

  • so punk/crossover-thrash and punk (as in PUNK not PUNK POP) is ok?

I want to know the same thing. I listen to lots of punk, the real kind, of course, not the gay kind.

I really don't think it should matter, since the point of this group is to be united against the utter shittiness of nu-metal, instead of creating some narrow definition of what metal is and excluding everything else! Sure I hate nu-metal but I'm not one of those people that listens to nothing but real metal. I enjoy other genres including hardcore/punk, indie, post-rock and post-metal, drone, stoner/doom,sludge metal, and noise rock.

  • I personally think metalcore is worse then Nu-Metal..

I purchase all of my cd's! The only Journal entry I have on my page lists them all. Go comment :)
  • metalcore is the new numetal? (though i am guilty of one or two plays of killswitch engage once in a while.)

Metalcore is the biggest crap I ever heard. Its just a horrid noise. No, it must stay there in unwelcomed genres.
So, I was strongly against industrials, but.. I tryed and listened to Deathstars - Cyanide.. not bad.. but still it didnt changed anything.

metalcore is in NO WAY worse than nu-metal. i listen to a few bands, but overall i think the genre is too stale. i also listen to punk, and a whole shitload of it, to boot. i think that metalcore should be welcomed, in general, and we should exclude certain bands (like Avenged Sevenfold...)

  • avenged sevenfold should be *unwelcomed*. they are sell-outs. claimed in an interview that they make music that people want to hear.

:( I really taught that this group is against all bullshit(nu-metal, emo, and anything that ends with -core and any other shit) but it seems its not that.
In Rammstein forum I seen that here are industrial fans(how sad) but metalcore.. erm.. its stupid, metalcore shouldnt be removed..
I hope that Fnts with these discussions just want to see how ''trve'' we are not to sink this group down...

Metalcore in my opinion is worse than nu because it sounds so much more like metal, more and more people believe it truly is the savior of american metal.

Also, on occasion I listen to other genres of music, usually limited to hard rock, punk (the sex pistols type), protopunk, and grunge... So.. Yeah.

  • If people are stupid enough to believe this "saviors of Metal" bullshit, I, for one, can't be bothered with them.
Metal does not/never has/never will need a "savior", plain and fucking simple.
