Many people are confused about the meaning and usage of the terms atheist vs. agnostic. A frequent claim made by theists is that being an atheist implies certainty about the non-existence of God. At the other extreme, many people apply the term agnostic as if it simply means waffling on the issue of whether or not God exists. The following explanation is presented as an attempt to clarify these terms.

Agnostic atheism is the co-occurrence of atheism with agnosticism. Hence, an agnostic atheist does not believe in any deity, but simultaneously does not claim knowledge that deities do or do not exist. This is in contrast to atheists who claim knowledge that deities do not exist. Agnostic atheism should not be confused with weak atheism; the former pertains to both belief and knowledge, while the latter is a more specific statement about belief. It is possible for an agnostic atheist to subscribe to either strong or weak atheism, independently of his or her agnosticism.

    I've termed myself as an atheist with agnostic tendencies for some time now. Closest I've ever come to a conception of a god is deistic... Tends to leave me with strong atheistic views, while remaining skeptical and therefore agnostic.

    There are some. Just visit a random forum on philosophy or secularism or whatever; if a gnostic atheist is present, he usually will be one of the most obnoxious users. But it is indeed a rare breed.

    Do any of you have any idea how many self-proclaimed gnostic atheist are out there? I've never met one. It seems most fall in the agnostic atheist category.

    No-one can prove nor disprove the existence of a creator. Should one exist, why would it want to be worshiped? If people reallocated the sheer effort and time it takes to argue about god, worship god, and fight over god to more constructive tasks, humanity probably couldv'e solved all of its problems by now.

    It angers me that even people that study these things still say them the wrong way there was a guy in my speech class that did a speech on gnostic and agnostic and still said that you couldn't be a gnostic or agnostic atheist and stated that it did not make sence because he said being agnostic meant you still believe in a god, but that is not true, it is simple the lack of knowledge to know one way or the other

    actually its a bit weird to have a group for this... but its not as weird as how common ppl mistake the meaning of agnosticism and atheism. Good idea i guess.
