Biosphere (Norway)
Saturday, 3 November 2012 - 7:30pm / Kings Place, Hall One

Biosphere (aka Geir Jenssen) hails from Tromsø, Norway, a city 500 miles above the Arctic Circle. He is widely regarded as one of Norwegian electronic music’s most prominent artists.

His career spans nearly two decades, six albums, a tune on a Levi's advert, remixes, various sound installations, commissions, soundtracks and even the odd Himalayan summit (he’s a keen climber and mountaineer). During the 90s, working under the name Bleep, Jenssen was an acknowledged precursor of what later became known as ambient techno. Fusing elements of composition derived from environmental experimentalists such as Brian Eno, Jon Hassell, and Walter Carlos with the rhythmic backbone of urban dance styles such as techno and acid house, ambient techno's popularity would grow with the popularity of artists such as the KLF, Irresistible Force, Higher Intelligence Agency and, of course, Biosphere.

Biosphere also composed the soundtrack to the aptly titled 1997 movie Insomnia, underpinning the main character’s developing insomnia with masterful edgy, monotonous and droning sounds.

The last ten years have seen him working on a series of albumson the Touch label, highlighted by the Debussy-inspired Shenzhou (2002), Dropsonde (2006), and Wireless (2009).
