Eigenlijk wilde Allan Holdsworth saxofoon spelen, maar wegens geldgebrek werd het de gitaar. Gelukkig maar, want in de progressieve muziekhoek heeft hij geen introductie meer nodig en is hij wereldberoemd met zijn vooruitstrevende combinatie van rock en jazz.
Eerder was hij bandlid van befaamde jazzrockgroepen als Gong, Soft Machine, The New Tony Williams Lifetime, Level 42 en vele andere. Sinds de jaren tachtig brengt hij zijn eigen albums uit waaronder IOU, Road Games en Metal Fatigue en schudt hiermee de gitaarwereld wakker met zijn eigenzinnige en unieke sound. Niet slecht voor iemand die geen noten kan lezen.
